My husband is the ultimate introvert. (Opposites attract!)
He doesn’t talk much and would prefer not to talk to new people especially if there’s not an obvious connection. So attending a conference last week was misery – until he tapped into sports small talk.
It shouldn’t be a big revelation. I talk about it all. the. time. I write about it every week – he even gets the list of #ConvoStarters delivered to his mailbox every week (Hi hon!)
Hearing about the value of sports small talk and then experiencing it for yourself is different.
He couldn’t wait to tell me about the Patriots fan he met (my husband is from New Hampshire and my in-laws are Patriots fans.) When I commented about how it’s not hard to find Patriots fans he said, “No, you don’t understand the guy I met is from Portugal and became a Patriots fan while he was overseas. We ended up talking about travel and vacations.”
My husband was so pleased with himself.
All I could say was, “I told you so.”
Sports conversations don’t have to be about sports. Use them to open doors, to make it easier to talk to people you don’t know but should. If you need help getting started these #ConvoStarters should help.
