A week into the New Year and I’ve failed.  I meant well with my resolutions, which included flossing more and blogging more, but to date I have done each just one time.  I’m not willing to cast my list aside, but I am going to move forward with a different approach.   Something that works not only with my desire to floss more often, but an approach that also works if you’re trying to expand your sports knowledge.

  1. Be realistic.
  2. Set specific goals.
  3. Don’t give up.

It’s pretty obvious how those steps impact my pearly whites, but here’s how it works from the Talk Sporty standpoint.

Be realistic – If you’re more of a sports novice and a savant, don’t expect to learn everything over night.  Taking small steps still gets you where you want to go. It’s better than missing out on the journey all together. And that’s really the way you should think about it.  Following sports is a journey, something that you can do for a lifetime with friends, family and other fans.

Set specific goals – Don’t just jot down ‘learn more about sports’ make a game plan that will get you to that point.  Try something like: read sports headlines every day, read one sports article a day, watch Sports Center for 10 minutes, watching one baseball game a week, or reading Talk Sporty Conversation Starters each week.  Pick something small and get started.

Don’t give up – Forming new habits can be challenging, don’t give up. If you forget to read the sports page or fall asleep before Sports Center comes on, forget about it.  You’ll get caught up later.  It’s a process and there’s still plenty of time to conquer that resolution.
