On occasion, I try to post “success stories” of working professionals who have used sports conversations to build stronger business relationships.

I met a woman last week at a Women and Mothers in Finance group who shared that her knowledge of football helped land her a job because she was easily able to engage and converse with her future employer during the interview.  She has worked for that company for a few years now, and gets regular football related text messages and emails from her manager.  As a result, they work more closely together, have created solid rapport and become more productive when working together.

Her coworkers, on the other hand, marvel at how she can communicate so easily with her manager.  They’ve asked how they can have the same relationship and rapport.

Sports conversations, on the surface, don’t seem relevant in many professional settings, but make sure you look past the actual content to the connections being made and fostered.
